How to Make Rice

1. Put rice in pot with water on high and bring to a boil.

2. When it starts to bubble turn it down and sift the rice with a fork, gently. Add salt and pepper to taste

3. Wait.

4. Wait – don’t give up just yet. Add water if it gets too chunky looking. Or turn the heat even lower and keep sifting with the fork, let the water slowly evaporate.

5. Wait. Try again next time 🙂

I am certainly not a brilliant chef. I love food but I trust anyone but myself when it comes to preparing it.

The photos above are real attempts of me trying to make rice. And you know it still isn’t perfect. But at least now it’s edible.

Suggestions & Tips I’ve Received about Rice

  • Use a lid
  • Wash the rice
  • Don’t stir the rice, it cooks itself
  • Get a rice cooker
  • Maybe just don’t?

I don’t mean to sound dramatic, but I have been trying to make rice for years! It almost always comes out very mushy, tasteless, or over salted.

It wasn’t until I stopped listening to how others made it that I figured out a somewhat edible meal.

When I silenced the recipes buzzing in my phone from so many sympathizers I was finally able to understand that there is no one way to make the seemingly simple food.

Like many things in life, rice is kind of arbitrary, and therefore, extremely moldable. Just think about it – rice transcends culture.

Not to mention all the other rice I simply haven’t photographed in my past, like vegetable fried rice, risotto, white rice with soy sauce. The list goes on.

There are so many ways to prepare it, and so many flavors and textures that it can adopt. There is no ‘perfect rice’, therefore even my crappy rice can be good.

*Warning* Extremely corny paragraph ahead!

Rice is great. Rice is like life – simple, and hardy, nutritious. Rice is what you make it.  Life is what you make it. Anyone can make rice, and anyone can lead their best life. Make it your own and enjoy!
